As many as two million Burmese citizens reside in Thailand. Approximately 125,000 live in camps near the Burmese border, but the rest are classified by Thailand as “illegal immigrants.” Thailand has not signed the 1951 Refugee Convention, and has no legal process to determine whether immigrants face a well-founded fear of persecution in Burma, which would entitle them under international law to protection as refugees.

Da's snel Hettie, die cd heb je vast thuis

Info over de cd:

Artist  Various Artists
Album Title  Don't Call Us Immigrants
Date of Release  2000
AMG Rating
Genre  World
Type  various artists

AMG REVIEW: The fact the informative liner notes are written by Pressure Sounds label founder and modern dub avatar Adrian Sherwood is a sure sign of the historical importance attached to this compilation. The music on Don't Call Us Immigrants marks the emergence of the original wave of U.K. reggae bands, many of them the children of the original post-WWII immigrant wave from Jamaica to the U.K.

Don't Call Us Immigrants is 100 percent crucial for anyone seriously investigating the global facets of reggae history — after all, this was the first major offshoot to develop out of Jamaican reggae's worldwide explosion in the '70s. And it's only slightly less valuable and enjoyable for everyday roots reggae fans.

The people of the sea  - Esther Lombardi

Imagine a place where "the people of the sea" are torn between land and their ocean kingdom. There's love, loss, rescue, return, and more ... David Thomson presents a whole world (more old than really new) in his exploration of the Atlantic gray seals, also known as selchies.

Many fairy tales involve animals of various types. In this book, the legends of the selchies come to life, with stories of seals who cry real tears, and gather in mourning the death of one among them. As Seamus Heaney says in the "Intro," the book "presents us with an image of ourselves."

Chao'Lay" that means people of the sea

Chao Laysare seafares and live at the shores of the south of Myanmar and the western coast of Thailand and the Malaysian coastline. The Chao Lays are closely to the sea and all their life is in relation to the sea. They belive in the prosperity of the sea and the spirts of the islands. Chao Lay's Boat Launching Ceremony is held during, the monsoon seasons and should protect the people from the evil and all bad things which can happen in their life. The Ceremony is held two times a year normally in June and November. The people take wood of Rakam and Thong Lang from the forest and bring them in a parade to the village. At the "Toh Ta Meas" a ceremony is held and prays for luck and happiness are expressed, than the boat is made and decorated. The boat is one meter wide and three meters long and a small building is on the top. A Krathong filled with 12 wooden dolls and flower, food and fruits and very personal things completed the offerings. When the night falls the people rub a handfull rice on their body and let the boat float beliving that now the evil and the pain of life are gone and everybody can now start a happy life again.

...
From their Malaysia colony, the ever-acquisitive Brits were eyeing the uninhabited specks of islands just north of Malaysia's Langkawi Island. Realising that Thai claims to the islands would be stronger with Thai nationals living on them, the governor of Thailand's Satun province granted the chao leh the right to settle there in 1909. Villages emerged on two tiny islands, one on Koh Lipe and the other on nearby Koh Adang.
...
Pulau Lipe - (chao leh for "flat") lies like a gentle, forested jewel in the sea. Pulau Hadak (chao leh for "strong") boasts forested granite mountains which provide a dramatic backdrop for the chao leh village hugging the coast.
...

Een van die 2 eilanden ?

Satun also hosts the cultures of an indigenous group called Chao Le (Orak Lawoi, Orang Laut or Sea Gypsies) or an official label of Thai Mai (recently naturalized Thai) whose settlements can be found on Lipeh Islands, Tambon Ko Sarai, Amphoe Muang Satun; and on Bulone Island. These people observe distinctively different cultures and traditions from those of the local people.

Misschien Kolipe?

Ko Lipeh
Home to the sea gypsies of Satun. These fascinating people live in stilt houses made of bamboo and have many "God-offering" ceremonies which comprises a special dance believed to keep away evil spirits.
