Priest of Bangkok’s Slums
Father Joe Maier has worked tirelessly for the poor of Bangkok’s slums for years. Through his efforts over thirty schools have been opened to bring education to hundreds and hundreds of children. Father Joe is the director of the Mercy Center that provides home and shelter for the street children of Bangkok. Father Joe and his social workers provide guidance and assistance to the people of the Klong Toey slums, working with these poverty-stricken families to create a full-fledged self-development program that covers education, public health, and other essential community services.
On August 19, 1999, Father Joe’s apostolate was officially expanded when the Mercy Center opened a new Legal Aid Clinic in this city slum. The Bangkok Post, the largest English newspaper in Thailand, reported this event in large, bold print in their August 20, 1999 edition. The newspaper stated that this new clinic was established to give legal aid and advocate the rights of underprivileged and abused children, as well as abandoned young offenders. The project is sponsored by the Canadian Government, which provided funds to cover start-up costs. Law students from the University of Toronto, serving as interns in Thailand, helped coordinate establishment of this new center.
Father Joe said that this Legal Aid Clinic is the first to be officially established in Thailand. He hopes that more clinics of this sort will be set up in other parts of the country. This new center will provide assistance to disadvantaged youngsters and especially young offenders who have been released from juvenile detention centers.
